Happy Feet Plus
Happy Feet Plus began selling Birkenstock in 1985 when very few people in Florida knew what they were. Jane Strong and Jacob Wurtz pioneered Birkenstock in a kiosk in the middle of a fashion mall in St. Petersburg, Florida. They opened their first stand alone store three years later in Tampa, Florida. For ten years they also marketed the products at fairs and shows all over Florida, as well as the East coast of the country, collecting a mailing list of over 200,000. Now, with the help of their dedicated staff of 40 some employees, they have nine Happy Feet Plus locations on the west coast of Florida. Two St. Petersburg locations and one in each of the following : Clearwater, Largo, Carrollwood, Brandon, Ellenton, Sarasota, and most recently, Fort Myers. They are currently looking at the Orlando area. Happy Feet Plus also sells their footwear at www.happyfeet.com where they were one of the first in 1995 to have Birkenstock online.
In 1999 Happy Feet Plus was the first retail shoe company to acquire an Employee Stock Ownership Plan(ESOP) in order to share profits with the employees. This has lead to many long term employees at Happy Feet Plus.
Not only was Happy Feet Plus a trendsetter when it came to Birkenstocks and employees, in 2003 they constructed an environmentally – friendly “Green” building which is their Clearwater store. Although all their locations have “Green” features, the Clearwater store was the first retail business in the USA to be awarded “Gold” certification in accordance with the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy Efficient Design (LEED) standards. They met strict standards in water conservation, energy efficiency, air quality and use of recycled materials.
