Waste Not:

April 30, 2010

e-waste

Hello again, Birkenstock fans.

Remember last week when we mentioned the things we do around the office to minimize our carbon footprint? Well, I’ve been snapping a picture or two lately so we can share some of them with you here on the Birkenstock blog.

Earlier this week we had these gents come by and collect e-waste from the entire business park. Old TVs, computers, monitors, just about anything electronic was acceptable.

e-waste

We spread the word around the local businesses and thankfully we had a splendid turnout. Rumor has it people were flagging the e-waste guys down on their way out of the parking lot and cramming the already stuffed vehicle with even more donations.

e-waste

All of the material collected by the gentlemen at Renew Computers is firstly combed for parts used to repair or rebuild other computers. What remains is recycled accordingly. We were happy to contribute.

Up next we’ve got a clothing drive to benefit Image for Success and a shoe drive to benefit our good friends at Soles4Souls. All happening next week!

I’m looking forward to these, spring cleaning means donating no less than 10 pair of shoes and a slew of old clothes that might be appreciated by someone who really needs them.

Aaron

Everybody Do the Flamingo: Birkenstock 225/365

Wearing my Arizonas

Park times are playful. When you just have to let the little kid in you out for some fun make sure you’re wearing sandals, as kids do. These Arizonas are the perfect compliment to an afternoon of Simon Says, ice cream sandwiches and even slip-n-slides.

Do us all a favor and let the kid in you out to play this weekend. You’ll not soon forget all the fun you had.

Aaron

Shadows On The Water From A Memory

It’d be pretty neat to live this close to the park, no? Back deck bbq’s would feel like picnics every time. This is a lovely shot, a lovely dress, and if we might say so, a lovely pair of Gizeh sandals on her feet.

One more day of Park Week left. Have your photo featured on the Birkenstock 365 by adding it into the flickr pool today! Happy shooting.

All By Themselves: Birkenstock 223/365

April 28, 2010

*

You know, sometimes you just have to take your shoes off and romp around in the park barefoot to feel the grass between your toes. We’re okay with that here, just make sure you’re getting to and fro in your favorite pair of Birkenstock footwear. Like this well loved pair of Madrid sandals. Neat photo!

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a picnic to plan.

Impromptu Park Week! Birkenstock 222/365

April 27, 2010

With the second selection for the week, we’ve chosen yet another shot from just inches above the grass in a park. With that why don’t we just make it Park Week here on the Birkenstock 365? Good idea? Good idea.

Check out this cute pair of Mayari sandals. The look like they’re right at home on a picnic trip to the local park. They pair nicely with good friends, a sunset, and a bike ride.

Get out there and take your own Birkenstock park photo. We’ll look forward to seeing it in the flickr pool.

Earth Day Commute

April 26, 2010

check me out

ready to roll

Earth Day is an opportunity for people to recognize their mindfulness of their own carbon footprint. It’s also a chance to educate those who are largely unaware of their ecological impact and the implications of their choices.

While Birkenstock is a comfort footwear brand we’ve also always been an outspoken advocate of preservation and the three big R words you hear most during Earth Month: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. In an earlier blog post we detailed a few things we’re constantly doing around the office to stay green.

This Earth Day I thought I’d make a sacrifice and share it with you all. I drive to work every day from San Francisco to Novato which is roughly 30 miles, door-to-door. Because there are so few Birkenstock employees who live in San Franicsco (and the ones who do have different schedules) none of us are able to carpool. While my commute is necessary there is no real public transportation from San Francisco to Novato: no BART, no CALTRAIN, no MUNI. There are ways to get to Novato from San Francisco without driving but you’d be using multiple lines and the commute time would go from my usual half-hour drive to upwards of 2 hours.

So, to celebrate, I thought I’d try out a new option. I had a pair of Birkenstock Milano sandals customized by a repair shop into SPD bicycling sandals so that I could ride my bike to work (see photos above). After some thought, and assessment of my physical limitations I found that riding my bike AND taking a ferry would be my best route and would still maintain the goal I set which was simply not to drive.

I set out around 8:30AM and headed straight for the Ferry Building, thinking I was already running late. I had a wonderful ride through Golden Gate Park and my SPD Milanos were working splendidly. I managed to make it to the ferry with enough time to grab a coffee and put my feet up for a quick 35 minute ride to Larkspur.

I'm on a boat!

I was able to hang up my bike on a well-placed rack and sat down to have a look at the directions I’d printed from Google’s new bicycling routes only to discover that I’d forgotten them at home!

on the ferry

Thankfully just as we neared San Quentin and the dock in Larkspur I realized that I could probably manage to find my way into work using the maps on my iPhone.

San Quentin

I got off the ferry and figured out my route within minutes. Taking off from Larkspur I stopped to talk to a group of school kids and parents who were waiting for the ferry in the other direction, they kindly thanked me for riding choosing alternative means of transportation on Earth Day. Seemed they were headed into the city for some Earth Day celebrating themselves. Here’s a quick photo of my view on the bike and a neat statue on the road leading past San Quentin.

The maps on my phone proved to be the perfect guide and I slowly made my way towards Novato. Stopping every once in a while for water and to shed some layers (ok and also to rest because HILLS).

break time

All-in-all I had a lovely ride through Marin’s back roads. I made my way into work roughly 3 hours after leaving home and I was feeling great. I tallied up a total distance of 17.7 miles on the bike that day and 10-12 miles on the ferry is my estimation. If I had the time to make this same commute every single work day I would.

My SPD sandals made the trek to work comfortable and efficient at the same time. They also made for a nice conversation piece with other commuters and bicycle riders along the way.

The day was a success and I feel like I accomplished my goal in style and comfort. Eagerly anticipating something on a grander scale next year!

Parked: Birkenstock 221/365

31/365

The time is here to be parking yourself in the… well, in the park all weekend long. Legs crossed, feet adorned in the least expensive yet most fashionable sandal Birkenstock manufactures: the Madrid. The weather is fine outside, go grab yourself a shiny new pair of Birkenstock footwear to celebrate BBQ weather.

It’s still Earth Month, folks. Take the bus, ride that dusty bike, or carpool to pick up those sandals! Look for a comprehensive post of my trip to work last week on Earth Day later today!

Alternative Means: Birkenstock 219 & 220/365

April 23, 2010

panorama

Hey everyone! As most of you know, I rode my bike (17.7 miles) and took a ferry to work yesterday as a way to celebrate Earth Day. I had a custom pair of Birkenstock SPD sandals made so I could make my ride a little more efficient and fun, they worked fantastically!

The photo above is a poorly stitched together panorama from my seat on the back of the ferry. Getting a panorama together from the back of a moving boat is no easy task so take it easy on me, if you please! If you can ignore the mistakes in the photo, it’s kind of neat to look at large.

All-in-all, it was a wonderful day and a beautiful ride. Look for a complete run down of the trip in a blog post here on Monday. Until then…

Aaron

Tomorrow’s the Big Day: Birkenstock 218/365

April 21, 2010

Aaron's SPD Birks

Look at my modified Milanos in action! I’ll be wearing these puppies all day long tomorrow as I make my way from San Francisco to Novato via a ferry and my bicycle. Needless to say, I’m really excited for this adventure. I imagine it will be slow going and to reiterate, I’ll be tweeting and posting photos in real time on facebook so make sure to check in with us at either of those two webspots, or both.

Tread Lightly,

Aaron
