The Soles4Souls RV Makes a Visit!

March 2, 2010

This Friday (March 5) we’ll be welcoming Soles4Souls to our offices as they stop by to visit and pick up some donated shoes in their traveling RV.

Soles4Souls is a Nashville-based charity that collects shoes from the warehouses of footwear companies and the closets of people like you. The charity distributes these shoes free of charge to people in need, regardless of race, religion, class, or any other criteria. Since 2005, Soles4Souls has given away over 7 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes (currently donating one pair every 9 seconds.) The shoes have been distributed to people in over 125 countries, including Kenya, Thailand, Nepal and the United States.

We regularly hold “recycle your shoes” events to aid Soles4Souls, and this week we’re encouraging all our employees to bring in gently worn shoes for donation.

And we’ll post pictures of the event on Friday!

You can find out more information on Soles4Souls on their website and follow their roving RV across the country on their blog.

Find Your Perfect Fit for Comfort and Support

January 25, 2010

I sat down with KC, our resident fitting guru, to ask him why it’s so important to make sure you get a good fit when buying our shoes. KC has tons of experience in the fitting game; his day job at Birkenstock is talking to our customers and consumers, solving their problems and helping them get the best out of our shoes, sandals and clogs.

A: Why is it important to make sure you get a good fit when you’re buying a new pair of shoes?

KC: A good fit means that our customer will get all the comfort and support that they expect from Birkenstock. Proper shoe fitting incorporates not only overall length (heel-to-toe measurement) but also arch length (heel-to-ball measurement). Shoes are designed to flex at the ball of the foot, so a correct fitting properly positions the ball joint in the shoe and provides room for the toes so they aren’t confined.

A proper shoe fit will:

  • Assist with proper body alignment
  • Balance foot impact areas and aid in shock absorption.
  • Support the back and spine and help maintain skeletal integrity.
  • Cradle the foot in comfort and give firm support.
  • Reduce fatigue and joint stress.
  • Increase the life of your shoes (fewer breakdowns of sole, uppers).
  • Aid in maintaining healthy feet, bodies and minds.
  • Assist in preventing and reducing occurrence of serious foot ailments.

A: What’s the most common misconception or mistake people make when trying on and purchasing shoes?

KC: People sometimes think that Birkenstock shoes feel loose and look wide. But, they appear wider than most shoes because the design follows the natural shape of the foot. Birkenstock footwear is meant to be worn loosely. Support comes from the footbed. Wearing them loosely allows your feet to move naturally and improves circulation. If a new wearer insists on fastening the straps tightly, suggest that they loosen them once they are used to the feeling of Birkenstock.

Another misconception is that folks wonder why the footbed doesn’t have a soft cushion like some lookalikes. Most other “comfort” shoes are based on a soft support system. A soft mattress may feel great when you first lie down, but the longer you linger, the less good it does for your back and hips. Much like a firm mattress, the Birkenstock footbed is designed with firm support in the arch areas for more lasting comfort. The soft footbed styles do have added cushioning, but still maintain the firmer support of the Birkenstock concept underneath them.

Some people find Birkenstock immediately comfortable. For others, it takes a few hours, a day, or even a week or two to get used to the firm support. That’s because while most other footwear is cushioned, Birkenstock shoes offer firm support that nurtures overall body health.

A: Some people wear orthotic inserts in their footwear, are those compatible with Birkenstock footwear?

KC: A great feature of Birkenstock footwear is that the support offered by most orthotic inserts is already built in the footbed! To put it simply, Birkenstock contoured footbeds are created to match the shape and curves of a healthy foot. That’s why every one of our styles has an anatomically designed heel cup and pronounced arches. These natural contours promote even weight distribution essential to balance, good posture and circulation.

A: How long does it typically take to ‘break in’ a new pair of Birkenstock sandals, clogs, or shoes?

KC: Some people find Birkenstock immediately comfortable. For others, it takes a few hours, a day, or even a week or two to get used to the firm support. That’s because most other footwear is cushioned. Ours offers firm support that nurtures overall body health.

A: Does one style of Birkenstock fit different than another style?

KC: The classic line of Birkenstock features relatively the same fitting footbed throughout all styles. For example, an Arizona sandal will fit the same as the Boston, or London.

A: Lastly, if someone is on the market for comfortable footwear why choose Birkenstock products over another comfort/health footwear brand?

KC: The Birkenstock brand bares simple beliefs that include a strong commitment to foot health and how it contributes to the customer’s overall well-being. The phrase “form follows function” describes the concept behind Birkenstock. Most footwear today is designed according to the whims of fashion. All of our footwear includes a footbed shape that mirrors the contours of a healthy foot. At Birkenstock we know styles change…but no matter the look, feet still need support. We’ve made footwear for over 225 years and we continue to believe the customer’s comfort is the true measure of a shoe’s worth.

Seriously!?! This kid is the real deal. I think we’re all now qualified Birkenstock salesmen and women now. For fitting charts and more detailed info on fitting and shoe-care visit our handy guide to finding your perfect fit.

KC spends an even greater amount of time on his music, have a listen to that as well while you’re perusing the interwebs: KC Turner Music.

Tread lightly,

Aaron.

A Life In Zurichs: 30 Years in Birkenstock Sandals

July 21, 2009

We received this email yesterday from a confirmed Birkenstock lover and just had to share:

Tonight, I was walking my dog with a neighbor and I was wearing my Zurichs. They became a point of discussion because of their age and unique history. She could not believe that I have had these shoes for 30 years. In fact, she pointed out that she was one when I bought them! Shame on her!

Yes, they are my favorites and they have walked many miles around the planet with me. I bought them in New Haven Connecticut in 1979 and most people who saw them on my feet made fun of me. They made fun until I let them try them on! Back then, they were the MOST expensive pair of shoes I had ever purchased and coveted them for a long time before I could afford to buy them. From the minute I put them on my feet…. I could not take them off. Yes, even in the snowy months!

Anyhow, I have grown up with these shoes. I went to see Simon and Garfunkel in Central Park in them…. explored Stonehenge … rode an elephant in the jungle of Thailand in them…. hot air ballooning in Morroco….walked the streets of Llhasa wearing my trusty Birks! I walked the communities in the four states I have lived in wearing them. These shoes have been re-corked… barged… soled and worn back down yet again.

I wear them because now they are beyond shoes…. they are ol’ friends. Over the years, I have purchased 4 other pairs… all of which I enjoy but not like my Zurichs! There is something magical about these shoes! I am happy when I am in them. I am an explorer… an adventurer…. a wild woman breaking out of the ordinary in them and what’s funny is… I have felt all of these things since I bought them. It is sort of like the shoes have blazed my trail. I never know where the trail will lead but I definitely know what will be on my feet!

I share all of this for no other reason but to say thank you! I am so glad you brought Birkenstock to the US! I love my Zurichs! While my walk tonight might seem like an ordinary affair…. my neighbor and I agree…. it was truly extraordinary. How many can say that they have had their shoes for 30 years and will travel in them for 30 more gladly! And as my friend noted… “and they don’t even smell!” Just laugh.

Peace and Happy Trails!

Nora

Birkenstock 365 Day 22

Birkenstock

This image tells a great story; a lazy summer day, a slow walk in the sun, taking a few minutes to sit on a bridge to cool down and talk. You can almost hear the crickets chirping in the nearby field, the burble of the river gently flowing below and the laughter of your friends as you giggle and tell jokes. A perfect moment to stretch your toes out in your sandals and close your eyes…

…which reminds me how I ought to get out of the office a little more often. ;)

If you’d like to participate in our community art project, Birkenstock 365, upload your picture to our Flickr Pool, tweet us on Twitter, or leave us a message on Facebook. Or just relax, come back every day and enjoy the images as much as we are.

Until tomorrow,

Martin

Birkenstock 365 Day 21

July 20, 2009

jake, ball and birkenstocks

Aaron is off at a trade show this week, so it’s up to me to introduce today’s entry to the Birkenstock 365 collection. I hope I can keep up the great work he’s been doing.

This picture is called, “Jake, Ball and Birkenstocks.”

See Jake. See Jake’s ball. See Jake’s owner realizing that Jake’s been running around too much so it’s time to lay in the grass and show off her silver Madrids.

And who can blame her?

This is fun! I’ll see if I can do this tomorrow too. If you have a picture you’d like to see here, please submit it to our Flickr Pool. Or even follow everything we’re doing on Facebook.

Until tomorrow,

Martin

Susie Tompkins Buell on Birkenstock and Classic Fashion Brands

June 17, 2009

Susie Tompkins Buell (co-founder of Esprit, political activist and philanthropist) dropped us a note to let us know how much she loves the Birkenstock brand. She says;

Brands and products that we’ve relied on for years are fizzling out. The way I see it, there are very few iconic products that are left for us to enjoy and learn from. I like to call them standbys: they’ll always be there to come back to if you wandered off for a spell. I have my favorite standards, like Levi’s 501 jeans, Brooks Bros. classic button downs, Hermes Kelly bag, a perfect white Hanes tee, Lacoste polo, and of course, my Birkenstock sandals. New fits, colors, and textures will inevitably be added to the basics, but these classics will always endure. There’s no better look than that of the confident wearer of the classics in lieu of the trendy fly-by-night fashion that’s being pushed on consumers today.

Peace, love and Birkenstock,

Susie

June 3, 2009

Hey there everybody! We just had an idea. One that requires a little love from the likes of you! Don’t worry; we’ve done the dirty work (Boston clogs are good for that, you know). We want to start an interactive photo project by which we will collect images from you, the people who wear our shoes, and then feature a different image everyday. We’d love to have you start contributing! To get it going, we’ve created the Birkenstock 365 group on Flickr

Go there and contribute and you may have your images featured on Flickr and the Birkenstock website!

In case you’re not on Flickr feel free to forward us images through either the Birkenstock page on Facebook or through our @BirkenstockUSA feed on Twitter and we’ll do our best to upload them for you! A special thanks to @afranks for sending us this gem!
