Last year around this time we chose to celebrate Earth Day by informing the lot of you about some of our more notable green practices.
Earth Day is a day set aside to educate people about their carbon footprint and how to reduce their ecological impact. The spirit of Earth Day should be a constant, however, and we’ve been mindful of that here at Birkenstock since before Earth Day was a recognized event.
History aside, we’d like to share with you a few things we do to stay conscious of our overall impact on the planet.
In Germany, for example, to offset the construction of our newest warehouse Birkenstock is maintaining a nature reserve complete with a lake and chock full of highland cattle.
Here at the office in Novato, California we have a slew of events in store for the month of April, just a peek into what our entire calendar year looks like.
- Earth Day potluck at which we bring local and organic foods to share
- Electronic waste recycling event organized by Birkenstock and held for the entire community of businesses in our unique business park
- Clothing drive to donate new or slightly worn clothes to charity
- Soles4Souls shoe drive (I have 10+ pair to donate!)
- Nutritionist visit to Birkenstock HQ to discuss healthy, organic eating
These are a few of the events we have planned for our office. If you’d like to know a little more about the make-up of our footwear, please take a look at all of the wonderful information about our sustainable footwear production, which takes place in Germany.
My signature ‘Tread Lightly’ sign-off stems from the desire to stay constantly aware of one’s ecological impact. As many of you know I’ll be taking public transportation and riding my bike to work this Thursday, Earth Day, from San Francisco to Novato. A total of nearly 30 miles will be covered and I’ll be posting pictures and tweeting about it all day long. Follow my adventure! Had I enough time to travel this way to and from work every day, I would.
How are you celebrating Earth Day? Earth Month?
Tread Lightly,
Aaron
