Definition of a Family Business
Montague and Son: The Birkenstock Store is a high-end, family-owned European comfort footwear business that has proudly served the Virginia, Maryland, and DC areas for over 25 years. From our humble beginnings in Old Town, Alexandria, we have grown to five locations, including a brand new store, The Next Step, in Brambleton, Virginia.
It all began when a certain Montague named Peter decided he no longer wanted to be a self described “office gnome,” a.k.a “office slave.” He opened a store in Alexandria selling, of all things, hats, Swedish clogs, and other assorted random leather goods. His wife Penny supported this new and uncertain venture, despite her misgivings. Soon enter Birkenstock comfort footwear and Margot Fraser, founder of Birkenstock USA, and then Montague and Son: The Birkenstock Store was born. And here we are 28 years later. No more uncertainties or misgivings about doing the right thing!
Ours is truly the definition of a family business, with the second generation of Montagues, Sara and Chris, now actively involved in the business. Joanne Epps, our company Certified Pedorthist*, offers her amazing services in our Maryland location, and Jane Lee remains the pillar of the Vienna location. A more appropriate name for our business might be “Montague and Son and Daughter and Joanne and Jane and…” We try and bring the family atmosphere with us to the store – we’re the store where everybody knows your name.
Our mission is to create lasting customer relationships not only through comfortable footwear and satisfied customers, but also through continued consumer education. We take pride in providing specific solutions to foot ailments - each customer is dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
We also take great pride in selling the Birkenstock brand. The Birkenstock ideals of comfort through proper foot support, green materials and repairability have a special place in our heart. We are true “cork dorks.” Truly, the best feeling is when Birkenstock product, a customer with special needs, and our knowledge come together to create a unique retail experience. * A Certified Pedorthist, or C. Ped. is a specialist in using footwear - which includes shoes, shoe modifications, foot orthoses and other pedorthic devises - to solve problems in, or related to, the foot and lower limb.
